His government and blood line issued name is Larry Roy Sumner Jr. But along the way the now 22-year-old Michigan State University college student became "BiG L" . Larry said “I got the name "BiG L" when I was around 9 years old. My mother and father had always called me 'Little Man'. At one point we were moving and my dad said 'If you can move this mattress by yourself I’ll call you Big Man from now on.' I ended up picking up the mattress and moved it to the desired location and thus earned the name 'Big Man'. Through the years it just gradually morphed into "BiG L"
Just like many other gifted Rhythm and Blue singers he started singing in church. He sang his first solo at 3 years old and has been singing ever since. However, "BiG L" didn’t develop a real passion for music until he was 9 years old in the 4th grade. "BiG L" said fell in love with music and the piano after reading a book on the great composers in his school library and after seeing the movie “Ray”. He knew music was the field for me.” "BiG L" plays several instruments besides the piano including the recorder which is a small kind of flute plus the guitar drums, bass, organ and the harmonica. "BiG L" whole family is very talented and they all sing, his father Larry Sumner Sr. was the front man for the Detroit funk rock band Larry Little & The Roughnecks and he considers his mother to be one of the finest singers around and not just because she is his mother.
